How to Make Simple Syrup & the Simple Drink Recipes to Use It In
The world is spending a lot of time at home right now without the luxury of the bar up the street being open for business. These are strange times, but eventually, they will pass and things can get back to normal.
Until that day, we here at Savage Scorpions thought you might enjoy learning a few "tricks of the trade" so you can mix up your favorite cocktails at home. These classic drinks are fairly simple to make and each shares a common ingredient - simple syrup.
Believe it or not, you already have simple syrup in your kitchen. It's just not "put together" yet but it is true to its name - simple! We're sure you can handle it and if you add our unique drink ingredient to the recipes below too, then that will be a drink you could brag to your bartender about!
Simple Syrup Recipe
All you need is 1 cup of sugar and 1 cup of water. (That amount will vary depending on how much syrup you want to make at a time. A batch will keep fresh in the refrigerator for about a month.) Next, boil the 2 ingredients over medium heat, stirring until the sugar has dissolved. Let it cool and place it in a jar sealed with a lid.
Classic Mojito
Spring has sprung and the weather is warming up in most places. A wonderful time to enjoy a refreshingly minty mojito! This recipe puts that simple syrup you just learned how to make to good use.
You'll need white rum, mint leaves, fresh lime juice, simple syrup, and club soda. First, muddle the mint leaves, lime juice, and simple syrup in the bottom of the glass. (If you don't have a cocktail muddler, use a sturdy wooden spoon or ladle to mash those 3 ingredients together to combine their flavors.) Add the rum, shake it all together over ice, pour into a glass, top with club soda, and enjoy.
Tom Collins
This popular gin drink is a classic and it's very easy to create. You'll need gin, fresh lemon juice, that tasty simple syrup you whipped up, and club soda.
All you need to do is mix all of those ingredients together, add ice, and if you're feeling fancy, garnish with a lemon wheel, a cherry, and our creative cocktail garnish on top of those! If you're more of a vodka person, use that in place of the gin for a Vodka Collins instead.
Daiquiri
While the frozen strawberry version of this cocktail is probably the most popular, the original lime daiquiri is chilled with ice rather than blended with it. Simply pour white rum, simple syrup, and fresh lime juice into a cocktail shaker with ice, shake well, then strain into a chilled glass. Beyond that, you can always add some fresh fruit and pop it into the blender to create the frozen variety.
Now that you know how to make your own simple syrup, hit the internet and find a few more cocktail recipes to give a try. You may be surprised at how many actually have simple syrup as an ingredient, but that will no longer be a problem for you when you're bartending at home.
The one item you probably don't have in your kitchen already is our unique cocktail ingredient. That can easily be remedied when you order Savage Scorpions online.
Once the package arrives and you start mixing a few creative concoctions to go with them, we'd love to see photos of that final product! Share them with us on Facebook, Twitter, or tag us on Instagram using @SavageScorpions or #SavageScorpions. Oh, and don't forget to add #HowSavageAreYou to the post too!
