DID YOU KNOW... 11 Cool Facts About the Savage Scorpion!
The scorpions we are most familiar with (as we hope you are as well) are the Savage Scorpions we offer as a creative drink idea to drop into your cocktails and scorpion shots. This fantastic creature is pretty savage already before we got our hands on it. Scorpions may be a bit of a mystery to you, but the awesome facts in today's blog will change that and give you a new appreciation for them.
DID YOU KNOW...
#1 - They Are NOT Insects
Even though we have heard many refer to our scorpion shots as an "insect cocktail," scorpions are not insects. They are actually classified as Arachnida, making them distant cousins to spiders. They have 8 legs and 2 body segments, unlike insects which have 6 legs and 3 body segments.
#2 - They Are Ancient
Scorpions are the oldest arachnids for which fossils are known! They were the first arachnid fossils to be found in the Paleozoic strata.
#3 - They Get Around
Currently, scorpions can be found on every continent in the world except for Antarctica.
#4 - They Have Huge Families
Scorpions can have as many as 100 babies in a single brood! They are not hatched from eggs but instead are born alive. After being born, they crawl up onto the mother's back and ride there for 10-20 days until their exoskeleton is hard enough to protect them.
#5 - They Shed
The exoskeleton of a scorpion can be shed up to 7 times until they are fully grown and this can take up to 3 years. It's a dangerous time for them because, until the new exoskeleton forms, they are extremely vulnerable to predators.
#6 - They Glow!
Our Savage Scorpions don't glow under UV lights because of anything that is done to them during processing. They actually glow that way naturally! This is because there are fluorescent chemicals present in their exoskeleton. (Which makes for a cool drink or shot at a blacklight party!)
#7 - They Are Survivors
In the wild, a full lifespan is anywhere from 2-6 years, which is very long compared to other invertebrates. There are reports, however, of some scorpions surviving in captivity as long as 25 years!
#8 - They Store Food
Since scorpions have large food storage organs, they can eat humongous amounts of food in one sitting. That paired with their low metabolism means that they are capable of surviving anywhere from 6-12 months before needing to eat again.
#9 - They Can Survive Under Water
Another way that scorpions are amazing survivors is that they have book lungs much like horseshoe crabs. That means they can stay submerged underwater for up to 48 hours! Also, since they normally live in harsh, dry environments, they can survive a lack of water too, able to live on only the moisture from their food.
#10 - They Are Not All Scary
Most scorpions are not considered life-threatening to humans. Out of over 1,700 different species, only about 25 of those have venom capable of killing a human. (All of our Savage Scorpions are safe to eat. They are quality processed and have the stingers removed.)
#11 - They Are Great In Drinks & On Food!
The addition of Savage Scorpions to your drink menu, whether it be at a bar at your house or a restaurant that you own, is a sure way to liven up any gathering. Simply dropping one of our scorpions into a cocktail or shot draws attention and gets people talking.
They're not just for drinks either. Using them for a gourmet food topping on nachos, pizza, tacos... you name it... is yet another way to bring excitement to any get-together in a unique and fun way. As we mentioned earlier, Savage Scorpions are perfectly safe to eat as they are high quality processed and have the stingers removed.
