All About Vodka
Next week on Thursday, October 4, 2018, it is National Vodka Day. This popular liquor has had it's very own day since at least 2009, and today we're dedicating our Savage Scorpions' blog topic to it in honor of the holiday. Get ready to learn all about vodka and how it can be even better when our unique cocktail garnish is paired with it!
What is Vodka
Vodka is a distilled beverage made primarily of water and ethanol. Sometimes it will have traces of impurities or flavorings. Its name is a diminutive form of the Slavic word "voda" which means water, and adding the "k" causes the word to translate to "little water."
Traditionally this liquor is created through the distillation of cereal grains or potatoes that have been fermented. Today some modern brands use fruits or sugars as an added ingredient. Often it is drunk "neat" without any type of mixer, water, or ice, but shots are usually served chilled by keeping the bottle in the freezer. Popular vodka cocktails include Martinis and Bloody Marys.
Vodka Varieties
Vodka is known to be colorless and odorless, but with the many ways it is made today, that is no longer always true. With a variety of different distilling methods, each brand has a distinct identity. Vodka can be distinguished by its country of origin, the type of ingredients its made with (not always potatoes,) the alcohol content, and whether it is flavored or non-flavored.
There isn't really an internationally accepted standard classification of vodka, but there are some broadly classified variations. Here are the two you are most likely to come across.
Neutral Vodka
This type is so distilled, or so treated after distillation with charcoal or other materials, that it has no distinctive character, aroma, taste, or color. It is often produced using the traditional Russian or Polish recipe. Here in the United States, it is called classic or regular.
Flavored Vodka
Flavored vodka was originally created as an effort to cover the strong alcoholic taste of earlier neutral vodkas. Flavors can be added with extracts or chemical blends, or the liquor can be infused by letting fruit or other add-ins of choice soak in the vodka for a number of days. The liquor will take on the color and taste of it and the longer it sits, the stronger that flavor will be.
If you choose to celebrate National Vodka Day, consider having your vodka as a Savage Scorpion shot or possibly add the scorpion as a part of the cocktail garnish on your mixed drink. Either way, that Savage Scorpion will add an extra special something to your celebration that makes it a truly savage event!
