5 Refreshing Bourbon Cocktails to Try This Summer

With the summer heat starting to take off, we are always in the mood for a refreshing cocktail.  We love a good bourbon, but some of the traditional bourbon cocktails are not quite what we're in the mood for on a hot summer day.  We've found a few twists on the classics, and some fun new recipes to cool you down.  But if you still want to spice up your summer fun, don't forget to add a Savage Scorpion.  Whether you use them as a creative cocktail garnish or save them for your tequila shots, they are sure to bring the fun.

Mint Julep Sweet Tea

Two classic southern favorites come together to make an easy and refreshing cocktail we'll be drinking all summer long.  If the summer heat is still making you feel a little wild, add a Savage Scorpion garnish.

Muddle Mint leaves, 1 sliced lemon,  and 2 tbsp sugar in a pitcher
Add 3 cups of sweet tea and 1 cup of bourbon.
Pour over ice.
Garnish with a lemon.


Summer Peach Old Fashioned

This traditional bourbon cocktail gets a cool update with a touch of peach.  For those wanting to feel a little less old-fashioned, add a Savage Scorpion garnish.

Combine and Muddle 1.5oz bourbon, 0.5oz thyme simple syrup, and half a fresh peach.
Shake well with ice.
Strain into a short tumbler with ice.
Add a dash of Angostura Bitters.
Garnish with a sprig of Thyme.

Basil Hayden's Bloody Mary

Try this unusual twist on the brunch staple for a delicious jumpstart to your weekend morning recovery.  If you want to add some extra fun to your Sunday Funday, garnish with a Savage Scorpion.

Salt rim of a pint glass using a lime wedge and celery salt.
Fill glass with: ice, 1.5oz Basil Hayden's Bourbon, 2 dashes hot sauce, 2 dashes Worcestershire sauce, 1tsp Wasabi, and 2 dashes of celery salt
Fill with tomato juice.
Stir well.
Garnish with a celery stalk, lime wedge, blue cheese-stuffed olives, bacon, and a Savage Scorpion.

Kentucky Buck

From the same family of the summer classic, the Moscow Mule, the Kentucky Buck will be a new summer favorite for bourbon lovers.  For extra spice, the creator of this recipe recommends using black pepper infused ginger beer.  We recommend adding a Savage Scorpion.

Muddle 1 chopped strawberry, 3/4oz lemon juice, and 1/2 oz simple syrup.
Add 2oz Wild Turkey bourbon, 2 dashes Angostura bitters, and ice.
Shake and strain into a tall glass with ice.
Top with ginger beer.
Garnish with a strawberry slice.

Summer Grapefruit Sour

The whiskey sour has been a popular cocktail and staple for whiskey lovers for over a century.  This grapefruit variation is a cool and refreshing summer twist.  If you want to step it up a notch and really impress your cocktail connoisseur friends, surprise them with a Savage Scorpion garnish.

Add 1.25oz Bulleit bourbon, 1oz fresh lemon sour, 0.5oz fresh grapefruit juice, and 2 dashes grapefruit bitters and shake.
Strain ingredients into a rocks glass with ice.
Garnish with grapefruit.


Bonus Recipe: Southern Chase Shot

1 part Galliano herbal liquor
