Celebrate National Amaretto Day

What could be more fun than celebrating a day that is dedicated to a top spirit? Not sure what day that is? No need to worry! Savage Scorpions has all the information you need. Thursday, April 19th, is National Amaretto Day! An entire day is dedicated to this Italian liqueur. If you only remember one thing from this blog it should be that a Savage Scorpion pairs well with Amaretto or any spirit for that matter. Learn more about Amaretto in this week’s blog and check out some fun recipe ideas!

National Amaretto Day

In Italian, Amaretto means “a little bitter” and is usually made from bitter almonds, apricot kernels, or even both. These nuts are then infused in pure brandy or alcohol that results in the strong almond flavor that Amaretto is known for. At the start of the 20th century, Disaronno began producing their amaretto for a large market. It made its appearance in the United States in the late 1940s. When it comes to the actual beginnings of amaretto, there are a few legends that surround its creation.

How to Celebrate

Alabama Slammer

No one really knows who invented the Alabama Slammer, but the legend has it that the cocktail was first created at the University of Alabama in 1975.
Ingredients:
1 ounce Southern Comfort
1 ounce Sloe gin
1 ounce Amaretto
2 ounce orange juice
1 orange wheel and cherry for garnish
Directions:
Add all of the ingredients to a shaker and fill with ice.
Shake and strain into a highball glass that is filled with fresh ice.
Garnish with an orange wheel and a cherry.

Amaretto Sour Cocktail

This cocktail often times gets a bad rap because it’s known for being overly sweet. If the cocktail is too sweet, it’s more than likely created with a premade sour mix. When you use this recipe from Liquor.com, you should have a frothy, sweet, sour, nutty, and strong-tasting cocktail.
Ingredients:
1 ½ ounce Amaretto liqueur
¾ ounce cask-proof bourbon
1 ounce fresh lemon juice
1 teaspoon rich simple syrup
½ ounce egg white, beaten
1 lemon peel for garnish
2 skewered brandied cherries for garnish
Directions:
Combine all ingredients to a shaker and dry shake to combine.
Add fresh ice to the shaker and shake again until chilled.
Strain over fresh ice into an Old Fashioned glass.
Garnish with lemon peel and brandied cherries (if desired).

Flaming Dr. Pepper Shot

You’ll want to have a fire extinguisher handy with this one.
Ingredients:
Beer
¾ ounce Amaretto
¼ ounce Rum
Directions:
Fill a pint glass halfway with beer.
Add the amaretto to a shot glass and top with the rum.
Set the rum on fire and very carefully drop the shot glass into the beer. It’s best to leave this drink to the pros.
