Mardi Gras Themed Cocktails

With Mardi Gras just around the corner, Savage Scorpions thought it would be fun to highlight some New Orleans inspired cocktails that would be a great addition to your Mardi Gras celebration. We did some research and found a few great cocktail recipes from All Recipes. You’ll want to make note of these and try them out this upcoming week. Don’t forget to add the Savage Scorpions. They turn a regular cocktail into an extraordinary cocktail.

Mardi Gras Cocktail Recipes

Hurricane Cocktail
This delicious and refreshing cocktail contains two kinds of rum and different fruit juices. With this cocktail, you’ll be ready to handle any storm. Beware, it goes down easy but packs quite a punch.

Ingredients:
1-ounce dark rum
1-ounce light rum
1 tablespoon passion fruit flavored syrup
2 tablespoons lime juice
1 cup ice
Directions:
Combine dark rum, light rum, passion fruit syrup, and lime juice in a cocktail shaker. Add ice, cover and shake until chilled. Strain the mixture into a chilled cocktail glass.

Vieux Carre Cocktail
 This cocktail is named for New Orlean’s historic French Quarter. It’s a sipper that was created by a bartender in the Hotel Monteleone. To order this drink, just ask for the “VOO ka-RAY”.

Ingredients:
1 ½ cups of ice
1-ounce rye whiskey
1-ounce cognac
1-ounce sweet vermouth
1/8-ounce Benedictine liqueur
1 dash Angostura bitters
1 dash Peychaud bitters
1 lemon twist
Directions:
Put ice in a cocktail glass. Pour in rye, cognac, vermouth, and Benedictine. Shake in Angostura and Peychaud’s bitters. Stir, then strain into a short cocktail glass and garnish with the lemon twist.


Sazerac
This drink was invented in New Orleans in the 19th century and is full of history.

Ingredients:
¼ teaspoon anise-flavored liqueur
½ teaspoon white sugar
1 teaspoon water
2 dashes Peychaud bitters
Ice cubes
¼ cup rye whiskey
1 lemon twist
Directions:
Store a cocktail glass in the freezer for 15 to 20 minutes before making the cocktail.
Pour the anise-flavored liqueur into the frosted glass and turn to coat the sides. Dump excess liqueur in the sink. Add sugar, water, and bitters to the glass, stirring to dissolve. Strain into the glass and pour in the rye. Stir and garnish with the lemon twist.
