Scorpions Turned Into Pets

Scorpions aren’t just popular in the wild or in shots or cocktails. Scorpions are also very popular pet options around the world. While there are hundreds and hundreds of types of scorpions, Savage Scorpions took a look at a few of the more popular scorpions that are kept as pets. Thanks to animal-world.com these are some of the scorpions that we found.

Desert Hairy Scorpion – The Largest Scorpion Species in the United States
Family: Caraboctonidae

These scorpions are popular arachnids that are kept at pets due to their size and beauty. There are approximately eight Hadrurus species but there are three Giant Hairy Scorpions that are most familiar. These scorpions are notable because they are the largest species of scorpions in the United States, reaching up to about 6 inches in length.

These scorpions only live 7 to 10 years in the wild, but they are known to live in excess of 20 years in captivity. They are not considered dangerous but they are defensive. They will sting if given the opportunity or if they feel threatened. The sting is painful, but it’s usually of little medical importance.

Emperor Scorpion
Family: Scorpionidae

The Emperor Scorpion is one of the most docile of all the scorpions that are kept in captivity. Not only are they impressive to look at, but they are much more handle able than most of their relatives. The Emperor Scorpion is probably the most recognizable scorpion species and it is possibly the most commonly kept invertebrate in the world.

These scorpions might look terrifying, but the sting of the Emperor Scorpion is mild. It only causes localized pain that disappears after just a few minutes.

Flat Rock Scorpion
Family: Ischnuridae

The Flat Rock Scorpions are one of the most fascinating scorpions in the world. This species is only found in Africa and they are the longest, and possibly the heaviest species of scorpions in the world. Males can reach over 8 inches and females typically range between 6 and 7 inches.

South African Flat Rock Scorpions make a great pet for both beginner and advanced enthusiasts. While they might pinch, they almost never sting. They live a long time, they’re hardy, and they require very little maintenance.

Malaysian Forest Scorpion
Family: Scorpionidae

The Malaysian Forest Scorpion is often times mistaken for the Emperor Scorpion. Unlike the Emperor Scorpion, this scorpion is not handle able. It is a lot more aggressive than the other species. The Malaysian Forest Scorpio is quite defensive and will readily sting when it feels threatened. This scorpion is very aggressive and does not settle down in captivity.

Striped Scorpion
Family: Buthidae

The Striped Scorpion is the most widespread scorpion in the United States. This scorpion is extremely small. An adult only grows to about an inch in total length. The Striped Scorpion does not make a handle able pet. The species packs a powerful sting that usually produces intense pain that can last for several hours and even up to 2-3 days.
