The "Worm" Vs. The Scorpion

The “worm” vs. the scorpion. Quite frankly, we’re a fan of the scorpion, but we might be a little biased. Both are big trends right now when it comes to unique and one of a kind drinks and shots. In this week’s blog, we wanted to dig a little deeper and find out more about the “worm”. If you’re looking to spice up your drink, Savage Scorpions is the way to go. They can turn an ordinary drink or shot into something extraordinary.

The Worm in Tequila

The worm in the tequila bottle is actually a common misconception. This worm we speak of is never found in any bottle of tequila. If you do see a worm a bottle, it’s a product called mezcal. Mezcal is often times confused for tequila. Both tequila and mezcal are made by distilling the agave plant. Mezcal can be made from a blend of over one of 250 types of the cactus-like succulents. But in order to be classified as tequila, it must be at least 51% blue agave. Better yet, the higher the percentage of blue agave, the finer the bottle of tequila.
To break it down, tequila is a type of mezcal, but mezcal is not tequila and you will only find “the worm” in mezcal.

That “worm” isn’t exactly a worm either. We know, this is just becoming confusing. The “worm” that is in mezcal is actually a larva from one of two types of moths. They are known as maguey worms and they love on the agave plant. These larvae are called gusano and the bottles of mezcal that contain them are referred to as con gusano.

Why The Gusano?
There are many theories behind this question. One is traced back to a distiller named Jacobo Lozano Paez, who in 1940 found that the larvae changed the taste of the agave. He then began adding them to his spirits. Other people believe that the larvae bring good fortune and strength to the lucky person who finds it in their glass.
