Savage Rum Cocktails for National Rum Day

August 16 is listed on the calendar as National Rum Day. That happens to fall on a Thursday this year, which is a great excuse to take Friday off and make it a long weekend! Turn that long weekend into a savage one by trying out a few of the fantastic rum drink recipes below, and don't forget to add our tasty and unique cocktail garnish. When you add a Savage Scorpion, a simple drink turns into an exciting event!

Summer and rum drinks seem to go hand-in-hand, so this is the perfect time of year to celebrate this delicious liquor. Here are a few fun ideas for you to try the next time you're mixing up a refreshing cocktail.

Classic New Orleans Hurricane
from SpicedBlog.com

Yield: 4 Hurricanes

  • 1 cup light rum
  • 1 cup dark rum
  • 1 cup passion fruit juice (*see note)
  • 1/2 cup orange juice
  • 1/4 cup lime juice
  • 1/4 cup simple syrup
  • 1/4 cup grenadine
  • cherries and orange slices (for garnish)
1. In a large container or bowl, mix together all ingredients except for cherries and orange slices.
2. Pour over ice into hurricane glasses.
3. Garnish each glass with a cherry and orange slice before serving.
*Passion fruit juice can be a bit difficult to find, but we found it at our local high-end grocery store. It's totally worth the effort to track it down, though!

The passion fruit juice definitely gives this traditional New Orleans cocktail a classic flavor, but if you need to improvise, mix up a few of your favorite juices as a substitute. It will still taste great, and everyone will be focused more on the Savage Scorpion in the glass rather than the type of juice you used!

This is titled for the ladies, but fellas love this delicious drink too, especially when it's garnished with a Savage Scorpion! You can also mix this punch by the glass using 2.5 oz rum, 2 oz orange juice, 1/5 oz pineapple juice, squeeze of lime, 1/4 oz grenadine, and an optional dash of Angostura bitters.
